Route Description and Route Navigation
Fitness

If you aren’t already training, start now. Your training should include some serious hill work, either outside or on an inclined treadmill or stair climber, with weight on your back. Cycling, running, swimming, etc., are all great cardio preparation, but they don’t prepare one for the endurance or muscle groups needed to carry clothes, food and water for a full day. Don’t plan on just showing up and thinking it’s a long walk that you can grit out. That will make for a really awful, and really long, day. Try to get comfortable hiking with a full pack for at least 10 miles, covering at least 3000 feet of elevation change. If you do some of your training on a treadmill or Stairmaster make sure you have a climbing pace of up to 1000 vertical feet per mile as the date of the Event approaches. To avoid burnout and injury, taper your training about 2 weeks before the Event. The Mt. Bourgeau hike is 12 miles and over 5,000 feet of elevation change, with parts that are quite steep (in excess of 1000 vertical feet per mile). Depending on your origin, you may also be in thinner air than you are accustomed. Remember to fuel your workouts with sufficient electrolytes (we recommend Salt Stick brand capsules or chewables), and carbs during your workout) and protein (post-workout), and to get enough sleep to allow for recovery.

Weather
Being in the mountains, expect plenty of exposure to the sun. It is also possible we will encounter rain-the mountains are notorious for afternoon thunderstorms, which is why our plan is to commence the Hike shortly after sunrise so we can be off the mountain before prime thunderstorm time. Also, it may very well be cold and windy as you near the summit-if you have any doubts speak to those who have gone on various CFAC climbs in the past. Bringing various layers of clothing, including a wind/waterproof shell, will be key to remaining dry, comfortable and safe.
Buddy Groups
Depending on the size of the group, we may need to stagger our start. Owing to the small size of the trailhead parking lot, we will likely arrange for groups to shuttle in using a single vehicle. Also as a standard safety precaution, we will rely on the buddy system. We will break up into groups of 3 or 4. As the event gets closer, we will provide a sign-up sheet whereby you can designate your buddy group or join a partially filled buddy group. Each buddy group should plan to remain together-in no event should anyone be hiking alone.
